Steven Sher is the CEO of TECHTRON, a proudly South African provider of world-class information IT services to small & medium size businesses. Q: How would you define yourself in 3 words?
A: Reliable, honest, friendly
Q: What lead you to your current position as CEO?
A: I wanted to avoid the corporate space and build something that I was proud to be a part of. I also like to be in a position where I have a real opportunity to make a difference. Which caters for my love of solving different problems which CEO gives me that opportunity.
Q: What’s your biggest strength?
A: The ability to take a problem apart and find a solution quickly. I believe I can sift through the noise and quickly pick up the key points and come to a practical solution. This has really helped me in areas where I had little or no experience.
Q: What’s the biggest learning experience you’ve had?
A: By far the biggest is becoming a father for the first time, regarding business, facts and “best practice” don’t always equal reality, and when people are involved, things are always more nuanced. Even though TECHTRON is a technology company people still play the biggest factor in the success or failure of any technology service.
Q: What inspires you?
A: When we can help people make a real difference in their business or help them out in a crisis. This pushes both myself and the team to do even better by helping more business and improving our responses over time. Sometimes it’s a quick fix, but to the client you just saved their day.
Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
A: Not sure it’s the best but it’s one that comes to mind is an expression “True but irrelevant” so often we are more concerned with being right as opposed to solving the problem. Being right is far less important than just solving the problem. We are in the business of preventing and solving problems.
Q: What’s a superpower you wish you had?
A: Ability to see the future, Hindsight is 20/20 vision. Often answers seem so obvious after it’s too late, being able to see into the future would allow me to make less mistakes and solve problems faster and better.
Q: What’s one tech app/website you can’t live without?
A: Google.co.za, apps and technology change so fast but the ability to find what you are looking for or the next app is by far the most valuable. That said some of my most commonly used apps I use daily include PassPortal, my password manager, MS Teams and Notepadd++ because you still can’t beat a good old fashioned text editor sometimes.
Q: What’s one thing you had to learn the hard way?
A: You going to make mistakes in business and life, so rather learn to make them fast and learn to adapt quickly and move on. When I started the business, I used to want everything to be perfect before we did anything, yet no matter how hard we tried it was never perfect and the issues that did come up were often minor and easy to work around. Today I am much quicker to try something new and adjust as we go.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in 2023?
A: I am not sure how many people know but I recently purchased 100% of TECHTRON so 2023 will be an exciting year for me personally leading the company with no other partners. In regard to the company, the Managed Service Provider (MSP) space is maturing fast with the increase in security and compliance requirements. I am very excited for TECHTRON to position itself as one of the leaders in this space for the mid-market. We have started to build a really amazing team at TECHTRON, and I think we will do great things in 2023.
